Hello World

Hello world!

You may recognise this greeting as the traditional first output of a new computer programme. It also serves nicely as the opening line of a new blog, especially one which will be concerned with coding, computing… and the world.

To be clear – I am not a computer programme. My name is Megan and I am a human. You’ll have to take my word for it (or consider the possibility that this blog is an elaborate Turing test – my programming suggests that I should make no further comment on this possibility). I am also a data science student.

Why blog about data science? The primary answer is because I’m excited about it. I am four weeks into my first term and I am fascinated. The amount of data to which we have access is mindbogglingly vast, and the things we can do with it are astonishing. The future (of data, machine learning, AI) is nothing short of thrilling.

I also tentatively hope that I might have an interesting perspective. I am a newbie to all of this, so I hope my blog will be accessible to the uninitiated. I come from a humanities background (I am a history graduate) which affords me a certain grasp of context. I am a female in a mostly-male discipline. I like to write, and hopefully you might find my words engaging.

Programming has already taught me many things. One of the foremost of these is the importance of brevity. With that in mind…

À bientôt, world!
