Being Cryptic

I began this blog by introducing myself and my newfound love of data science. What I didn’t do was explain the title: ‘Cryptic Meg’.

‘Meg’ is simple of course – it is a shortening of Megan, and what some people call me. ‘Cryptic’ is more complicated. The word occurred to me originally because I enjoy cryptic crosswords. I then discovered that that the word dates back to the 17th century and sprung from the Greek ‘kryptos’ meaning ‘hidden’. This leads us on to the connection with ‘cryptography’ – which is defined as “the art of writing or solving codes”. How wonderful that cryptography is officially considered an art!

So what is cryptic about this blog? Or me? In a sense it is a misnomer. I don’t intend to be anonymous or mysterious. Nor do I intend my blog to be a cipher. Rather it is the subject matter that will be cryptic. I hope I will be using data science to unlock that which is hidden – to use code to uncover truths.
