I’m back! This website has been dormant for a while, but I have resurrected it with the resolve to write posts again. Why?
- To be brave! I have always been shy and have lately been particularly reclusive. (COVID-19, you may take your first bow.) Blogging, I hope, will allow me to face this fear of expressing myself.
- To learn. Writing about a subject will require me to do my research and reflect upon it.
- To write. I currently find myself agonising self-consciously over which words to use and how to structure ideas, so I would like the practice.
I am going to make some commitments, based on lessons learned from previous blogging attempts:
- I am not going to limit myself to a theme. Previously I have ceased to write when I have temporarily run out of thoughts to offer on my chosen topic. But if I have the freedom to write about anything, then voilà: endless possibilities!
- My aim is not engagement. (Another day we can talk about the engagement-driven ills of social media). Any interaction is a hopefully positive side effect.
- I should set myself a schedule. Not to beat myself over the head with, but to instil a habit. I will aim to post once a week, at the weekends.
- These posts do not need to be long, or world-changing, or beautiful, or inspirational, or any other word in the perfectionist’s arsenal. I would like them to be original, and helpful at least to me.
This is partially a selfish endeavour, but I hope only partially. I intend that by learning, writing and being brave, I can become a better person who can provide a better service. As an introvert (and an anxious one, at that) I find that my skills are not well aligned with helping people in a sociable way, such as advising, teaching, or comforting. But I hope that I can be of use to the world by educating myself and applying myself to helpful work with thoroughness and thoughtfulness.
See you again next week, world, when I might write about the ethical dilemmas of AI, or how much I love my new sleep mask. Or something in between.
