A Crafty Weekend

Last month an old schoolfriend of mine came to stay with us. Without planning it, we ended up having a weekend full of arts and crafts!

On the Saturday, we attended the Bovey Tracey craft festival (which Nicholas and I had been to the year before). We had a gorgeous time – looking round the stalls, trying out letter pressing, and listening to live music with pints. Nicholas was particularly thrilled to acquire a new axe for his woodworking endeavours! (It’s a restored axe head with a Dartmoor greenwood crafted handle.)

After that we went down the road to the House of Marbles, where we watched some glass-blowing and I bought myself a little glass bird.

Then on the Sunday, Nicholas taught Maddie how to do spoon-carving (a skill we had learned at the previous year’s festival) – and then he had an inspired idea. Why not walk up onto the moor near our house and do some carving there? So off we trotted.

Nicholas branched out a bit and made a small wooden mug (which he has since used for whiskey!). Maddie and I still have some work to do on our spoons…

What an excellent way to spend a weekend with good company!
