A Colourful Crochet Project

It’s been a little while since I picked up my crochet hook – but I like to make at least one thing for someone for Christmas.

This year I thought I’d make something for my 8-year-old cousin. (Previous crocheted gifts for her have included a hat & scarf set and a fairy amigurumi). Knowing she likes mermaids, I stumbled upon this idea:

Pattern on Ravelry, which can be found here.

First I sourced some appropriate wool at my friendly local wool shop. I was thrilled to find this – look at how mermaidy it is!

Then I started crocheting. The strap is made first, followed by the tail, which is cinched in to get the right shape:

Then I made the body, using the appropriately-named “shell stitch”:

And finally I put it all together. It can carry a small bottle – but I’m just glad it ended up looking so pretty. What a great pattern – I hope my little cousin likes it!
